A lot of pet treats carry claims about being lean or low in fat. But fat content in a finished treat depends on two things: the ingredient used, and how it is processed. Both matter, and they are connected in ways that are not always obvious from reading the packaging.

Why fat content matters in freeze-dried treats

Freeze-drying concentrates everything in the ingredient. Water is removed, but protein, fat, vitamins and minerals remain. This means a cut that is moderately fatty in its raw state becomes significantly richer once freeze-dried.

This is not a problem if you account for it at the start by choosing the right cut. It becomes a problem if you do not.

A high-fat cut processed into a freeze-dried treat can be harder on digestion, particularly for dogs with sensitive stomachs, older dogs, or breeds prone to pancreatitis. It also affects shelf life, since fat oxidises over time even without preservatives.

How we choose our cuts

At Gogo Treats, we choose low-fat cuts deliberately and specifically.

Kangaroo rump is naturally lean. It is a primary muscle cut from an animal that is inherently low in fat compared to most farmed livestock. Hoki is a deep-water white fish with a naturally low fat content and a clean flavour most dogs and cats find highly palatable. Angus tenderloin is a lean cut from a well-muscled part of the animal. Barramundi fillet is another lean, single-ingredient seafood option.

These are not marketing decisions. They are production decisions made because we freeze-dry everything we make, and we need the starting ingredient to be right for that process.

What this means for your dog

A freeze-dried treat made from a lean, specific cut is easier to digest, more consistent in its nutritional profile, and stays fresh longer without preservatives.

For dogs that need to manage their weight, for dogs with digestive sensitivities, or simply for owners who want to know exactly what they are feeding, the cut behind the treat matters as much as the animal it came from.
